The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Board of Directors finalized charitable contributions today and checks were written to 20 local charities, high schools, and worthy organizations.
“The Big Rock tournament looks forward to this time of year when “Charity First” takes center stage. Following another successful tournament, it is also personally gratifying to each board and staff member to see our hard work translate into meaningful contributions to worthwhile efforts”, commented Tommy Bennett, charity chairman.
Big Rock is the largest non-profit tournament of its kind in the United States giving at least $100,000 each year to deserving organizations. Each year in July the board president appoints a charity committee to carefully review all requests for funding. This year’s tournament
committee consists of Tommy Bennett-chairman, Billy Kornegay, Ben Moore, Richard Crowe and Randy Ramsey. The committee then reviews the requests received up to that point and continue their efforts until the deadline of October 15th. The entire process is driven by the fit between Big Rock’s five-point mission statement and the destination of the year’s charitable funds.
A large majority of the funds are derived from the strong support in sponsorship. The tournament drew a field of 53 sponsor’s in 2015 including boat manufacturers, real estate and local businesses. Big Rock’s major sponsor, Calcutta, has lead the way for the last 3-years. “We are very pleased to partner with the tournament and bring new experiences, such as the community concert this year with James Wesley, commented Chris Pardue”. We are looking forward to many years to come, he continued.
The success of this year’s tournament allowed a total of $337,000 donated to charity. Benefits include funding food banks, providing transportation, assisting cancer patients, school needs and bringing the symphony back to Carteret County for 4th and 5th graders. That brings cumulative donations thus far to well over $3.5 Million dollars….from a fishing tournament!!
